Petra A. Thürmann currently holds the position of the Director of the Philipp Klee-Institute of Clinical Pharmacology at the HELIOS Klinikum Wuppertal in Wuppertal, Germany and also
Chair of the Department of Clinical Pharmacology at the University of Witten/Herdecke, Faculty of Health, Department of Medicine.
After Studies of Medicine at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe-University in Frankfurt/Main, Germany in December 1986 she began as assistant lecturer and later assistant Professor at the Institute of Clinical Pharmacology (Director: Prof. Dr. N. Rietbrock) at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe-University in Frankfurt/Main, Germany. P.A. Thürmann obtained her Doctoral degree in 1987 and PhD (Habilitation) in 1997 and Board certified specialist’s degree in Clinical Pharmacology in 1992.
In 1997 she was appointed as Director of the Institute of Clinical Pharmacology at the HELIOS Klinikum Wuppertal and in 1998 at the University of Witten/Herdecke, Germany.
Besides clinical work primarily as consultant she leads the Research Unit of the HELIOS Klinikum Wuppertal, coordinating and overseeing approximately 55 clinical trials per year. P.A. Thürmann has initiated and conducted approx. 50 clinical trials as coordinating physician or prinicipal investigator and chairs since more than 15 years the ethics committee of the University of Witte/Herdecke, Germany.
She serves at several Boards in the German Health Care system, as member of the Drug Commission of the German Medical Association and since 2011 member of the Advisory Council on the Assessment of Developments in the Health Care System.
In 2002 P.A. Thürmann became Member of the Division of Clinical Pharmacology of the International Union of Experimental and Clinical Pharmacology (IUPHAR) and was appointed as treasurer and later on as secretary general of the Clinical Division of IUPHAR. Since 2014 she holds the responsibility as treasurer of IUPHAR.
